Great lens, highly recommend for portraits. Not worth spending the extra money for 1.4 or 1.2

It's not an L series lens, but it has that Canon build quality. It's solid, super silent and creates beautiful images with creamy bokeh if you use it right. Super quick and accurate focus. Stopped down to f4 and you have to really analyse your images before you notice too much corner softening. After f4 it remains scalpel sharp in the centre until you get above f11, then any sharpness drop-off is negligible. For the price, this lens is probably the best 85 1.8 I've experienced.

I was vacillating between 50mm f1.2, and waiting for the (then) soon to arrive 85mm f1.4. With an impending shoot, I saw a 85 f1.8 at a give away price on the second hand market, so I swooped in. I have forgotten about going for that "L" lens, the f1.8 does the job. I find it (almost) perfect sharpness (ok - I would prefer another red band in my kit, but hey!) and certainly sharp enough for my clients. If you are vacillating too - jump right in, you will not regret it (and you can always sell it when that "L" pull becomes irresistible!).

I bought a used lens (I heard it was ok to buy lenses used as long as the seller is Canon or any other known name). This lens was very dirty when I opened the box! The lens cap wasn’t attached to the lens at all. A microfiber wipe was not enough, due to the crusty caked on filth. Also, the lens wasn’t secure in the box, it was missing one of the styrofoam squares that go on each end to keep the lens secure in the box. I was afraid the lens would have performance issues, but after a lot of cleaning, to my surprise it worked excellently! This is my favorite lens now. Only complaint about the way the lens works is the distance required between the camera and the model, but if you are working in an area with plenty of room and little/no view obstructions (people or things getting in the way) then it’s no big deal.
