Good Points: sharp lens. superb quality beautifully rendered images - life-like not flat superb for portraits. Improvement Points: plasticky hood prone to scratching expensive but you do get what you pay for. No regrets purchasing lens.

this is an absolutely beast of a lens, the bokeh rendering is stunning, the color and contrast is stellar, the ZEISS pop is very evident in this lens, dont think about buying this just do it!

Theres literally nothing wrong with this lens. Foliage bokeh is a little jagged a double-lined(if youre picky). But AF is fast,its lightweight,colors and sharpness are good too. If you use 85mm for weddings or events,get this one. Buy it used though,its ridiculously priced :) as all Batis are.

Being a professional photographer you are constantly asked to solve problems that happen on shoots. Having been a product of the non-awesome pro zooms of the 80s you made due with primes like this. I re-fell in love with primes because of this lens and opened my mind to the thoughtfulness of Zeiss choice of Batis focal lengths. This lens is SHARP all the way through with minimal to no loss of quality at either end of the spectrum. Dont get me wrong I have made a living off of the zoom lens and they have their place in a fast paced gigs but primes make you think of what you want the photo to look like even before the shutter is released. The extra time is euphoric and makes me happy again- the reason I became a photographer! Warning!! If you buy this lens you WILL buy at least 1-2 more of the Batis!

It took me a while to warm up to this lens, and candidly I still dont love it. The build feels slightly fragile for the size, and somehow the balance on my A7riii is a little unwieldy. Images are sharp but somehow lack that extra punch. Auto-focus is fast and accurate but the manual focus ring drives me slightly batty to use. (Yeah, Im a bit of a MF snob, but was really looking forward to adding an AF prime to my kit.) So Im on the fence about whether to keep it or unload it: on paper, I should love it but in reality I dont enjoy shooting with itmeh sums it up well. Ill probably rent the Loxia and see whether I prefer that before I decide.
