�Seven Samurai� was a life-changing film for me, and it is always a joy to discuss and reminisce about the film. No matter how many times I watch it, I always laugh and cry at the same spots, as it is a film that transcends being just a film for me. I’m sure there are others out there that have similar feelings while others may not at all see the major significance. The BFI 4K UltraHD Blu-ray release is a stellar one, with a great transfer and a wonderful selection of extras that I am proud to be part of. Easily one of the best releases of the year. A veteran samurai, who has fallen on hard times, answers a village's request for protection from bandits. He gathers 6 other samurai to help him, and they teach the townspeople how to defend themselves, and they supply the samurai with three small meals a day. The film culminates in a giant battle when 40 bandits attack the village.

The video presentation of this movie is not perfect but that would be on the source itself. There are a few scratches in scenes and there is one sever smoothness in one scene which was really glaring but I've read how much effort has gone into it and I respect that. Aside from those, this great transfer. The audio has the option to switch between original and optimized which is always a win-win for purists and non-purists alike. The second disc is packed special features and very insightful. This is a top-tier quality blu-ray that shows reverence to the masterpiece. Highly recommended.

Akira Kurosawa's 1954 epic is long overdue a quality Blu-ray release in the UK. Sadly, this BFI release does little to change matters. Restored by Toho in Japan (with additional work done in the UK to remove further damage), it appears that somewhere along the way someone went a little overboard with the digital noise reduction tools – eliminating much of the native film grain and fine detail. Couple that with the relative lack of extras (a trailer and interview) and connoisseurs are far better off importing Criterion's Region A-locked US set with its more authentic transfer and copious goodies.

I had seen SEVEN SAMURAI (1954) a couple times on a 60" screen and enjoyed it each time. Wow, what a difference a total restoration makes! The film looks BRAND NEW, and it is now the perfect realization of this classic movie. Everybody knows the plot, it's essentially the first "mission" film, as a small village hires a band of 7 samurai to help ward off bandits who are intent on stealing their barley, rice and, perhaps, their women. Projected on a 20 foot screen via an HD 1080 projector, SEVEN SAMURAI is simply stunning, and it's certainly one of the best movies ever made, so do not hesitate to pick this masterpiece up on blu-ray. Now if we could just get the blu-ray treatment for Kurosawa's RASHOMON, THE HIDDEN FORTRESS, RED BEARD, IKIRU, THRONE OF BLOOD, THE BAD SLEEP WELL & DODESUKADEN...
