Dvd We Are Still Here

(This movie is actually a really long advertisement for whiskey) It's quite enjoyable, and visually beautiful, but the jump scares are mostly really cheap. The effects used for the ghosts are quite good, but at the end the story is not really explained. The plot twist (something that seems to be necessary nowadays even though it has the potential to ruin a good movie) is very predictable. With that being said the final scenes are pleasantly gory, and made up for a few of the bad points. Watch it if you are looking for the "small town, might be crazy" type of scenario and a horror movie where (shockingly) the main characters are not teenagers or young adults.

We Are Still Here is a decent horror story with a ghost element. It didn't feel fresh, or groundbreaking, in-fact very 80s yet modern vibe to it. Despite it not being groundbreaking, it's a solid horror film to watch with a horror fan. You'll likely forget about it in years to come, but you won't have wasted time watching it.

Interesting set-up, with an appropriate early pacing. There was a simplistic story that provided enough to draw attention, but the positives stop there. It quickly goes off the rails with over-the-top death sequences, which due to little tension being established, and poor practical effects, come across as cheesy rather than frightening. The acting was average at best, and characters are easily forgettable. The town never becomes as disturbing as Goeghegan hopes it to be. The directing also fails to portray the creepy nature of the setting, which may have otherwise added tension. By the end, it became a joke. So disappointing from an initially intriguing premise.

If you liked The Inn Keepers then you should enjoy this one as well. The plot is interesting and the threat is well imagined. It's doesn't look like anything I can remember as of late. Most of the acting is well done, but there is one actor who seems very unnatural delivering lines. That one person is the only thing bad I have to say about the film. If you are new to collecting, skip it, but if you are adding on then it is worth ten dollars. I am not an authority on video/audio so I try not to say to much about it unless it is obviously bad.

We Are Still Here is bolstered immeasurably by Barbara Crampton's excellent performance, but the film as a whole feels anchored to contemporary horror history in a way that the genre really needs to do away with. It used to be that a film "wearing its influences on its sleeve" was a casual or neutral observation, but this practice is choking the life out of the genre, where even fresh ideas have a tendency to drown in echoes of the past. Rent it.
