I ordered both the Gregory Maven 45 and the Osprey Kyte 46 so I could compare the two, and I ended up choosing the Maven. As they’re both the same size, my decision came down to ergonomic and ease-of-use issues. The Maven doesn’t have a ton of extra pockets, openings, and straps, but those that are there are very functional. The lid has a nice big pocket on the top with a very large zip opening, as opposed to the Kyte, which has a large lid but the zipper was so small I could barely fit my hand in it. The drawstring on the Maven is intuitive and easy to open, the pull-tabs are large and comfortable, and the belt pockets are easily accessible. The suspension was nice and comfortable. The 45 seems small, but it held everything I needed for a night or weekend in the wilderness, including sleeping bag, a small tent, cook stove, water reservoir, etc. This is a great backpack for someone wanting a pared-down bag for a short trip.
