Good Points: The character and rendering of this lens is phenomenal. Focus is quick enough for family, pets and portraits. Images look 3D. Improvement Points: Should be weather sealed at this price point. Some people may not like the low sharpness at F1.4 but contrast is still good to shoot wide open.

This lens has great bokeh. It makes the subject really stand out and nice contrast. The focus is fast. I used this to take pictures of indoor basketball from just behind and to the side of the backboard with excellent focus results and excellent isolation of the players from the spectators. Its a very versatile lens-good for scenery or people. I sold my Nikon 50mm 1.4 because this 58mm lens has better detail, contrast, it makes the subject pop, and I was not satisfied with the resolution of the 50mm on my d850 or d810. This lens is light and easy to carry.

I bought this lens really cheap on a good used sale and hated the thing on a d750. It just couldn't get sharp images by focus not sharpness. I upgraded to the d5 and it's now my most favorite lens. Especially love shooting it at 1.4 with a bright background. The specialty part of this lens blows any other lens like canons 50 or canons 85 1.2L out the water. Sure it's not the most durable but the auto focus on this lens with its specialty look beats any canon 85 1.2L focus as I've shot with other photographers at weddings and they never use past the portrait session where it's not fast-paced. I don't know what I would've done without this lens in my gear line up.

This lens is defective. I’ve tried calibrating it myself and even took it to a shop to be calibrated and it’s only sharp on two apertures. I’ll be sending it to Nikon to have it fixed and by that time, I could have just bought a new lens for the same amount. Thanks for nothing!

I have used a lot of high quality lenses and so write with a fair amount of experience. I love this lens. In the Nikon range this is the closest thing to the Leica 50mm Summilux that I have come across. Colors are perhaps not as vibrant as with other fine Nikkor lenses but it has a wonderful ethereal feel to it. It is plenty sharp, certainly at the center, and has a wonderful bokeh. But its distinguishing feature is its look. If you are looking for a straight-up 50mm prime (which is unfortunately a bit of a challenge in the Nikon line-up) this lens may not be for you. But if you want what this lens is designed for you won't be disappointed. Don't just think of it as a regular Nikkor because it isn't. Read what Nikon had in mind when they designed it so you know what to expect.
