Though competently made, the long gestated sequel is overwhelmingly lacking any of the energy and boldness of the 1992 original. Caton-Jones just isn't Verhoeven. Sharon Stone plays Tremell on auto-pilot and the eroticism lands with a dull thud. Couple that with a rather meandering story that bores more than it titilates, and you have an unnecessary sequel that is in no way addicted to risk.

Worth picking up since this is the unrated version. I used the 5.1 and PCM sound and I still had to put on subtitles. I used a home theater system to listen to this movie.

Skip It . I would watch this movie again if you paid me, but we'd have to negotiate the terms, because it would take a lot to subject myself to such torture a second time. I guess I've seen worse thrillers randomly on Netflix or Cinemax or whathaveyou, but none with this pedigree, none that should have known better. That's what makes this film so bad; it should have known and been better, but it was so poorly handled that it didn't come anywhere close. That makes it intrinsically worse, and I hated basically every minute. The video was fairly nice, the audio was OK, the extras were unnecessary, so don't look to the technical aspects to save the day. Just stay far, far away, I think that's best, and let's pretend the 90s didn't spawn all these attempts to recapture what we once held so dear.

This movie is extremely dirty in some scenes. Dirty enough in fact that the actors should be ashamed of being in them. The rest of the movie however has been underrated. It's not perfect. There's some tedium after a while ,and the sex scenes are nearly pornographic, but it's a well shot, well acted, and occasionally atmospheric cop thriller. Stone's Catherine Tramell is one of the most memorable and alluring femme fatales in cinematic history. She's the centerpiece of the movie and she supports it ably. It has a very good musical score, (Oscar nominated by the way), and overall it's somewhat memorable, but not good enough to be great. However, by today's R standards it's definitely not the completely pornographic sex fest critics made it out to be. Yes parts are pretty dirty, but it's mostly a crime mystery with a whole lot of plot, even if it could have been better.
