Director Phillip Noyce's second entry in the "Jack Ryan" franchise is definitely not as narratively deft as 1990's "Red October," but a slog of a film this definitely is not. In fact, "Patriot Games" marks a solid effort in not only the Tom Clancy cinematic catalog, but the spy thriller sub-genre in general, offering up a charismatic lead performance from Harrison Ford, a number of satisfying set pieces (including a truly impactful finale), a healthy dose of espionage intrigue, and a tantalizing series of cat-and-mouse-esque revenge elements that end up tying the whole movie together overall. Definitely a little more by-the-numbers than I would prefer at times, but still mostly watchable, entertaining, and even thrilling most other times.

Though not as good as Hunt for Red October, I thought the transition to Harrison Ford from Alec Baldwin was clearly a net positive. The bad Irish dudes were a welcome force - especially Ned Stark Sean Bean. I agree with the critics that the on-screen wife Anne Archer is a casting gaffe. Otherwise, good solid summer popcorn fare.

I decided to just rent this the other night for a few reasons, one is that I haven't seen it for a long time and it used to be a favorite and two, the bad pq reviews. But, honestly, I was very pleased with the look of the film! A real surprise and the aq TrueHd track sounded really great also. Recommended if you are a fan

For a movie that is 20 years old, the PQ is surprisingly good. Sure, it's not the best out there, but it is a solid transfer that is a step up from the DVD. The AQ is solid and I'm sure it sounds amazing on a surround sound system. The extras are pretty minimal, but the documentary on the making of the film was pretty good. If you are a Harrison Ford fan, this is a no-brainer. Go out and buy this movie. You will not be disappointed.
