Mafia Definitive Edition op PlayStation 4 wordt geprezen om zijn sterke verhaal, sfeer en muziek, die spelers echt onderdompelen in het maffia-tijdperk. De vernieuwde graphics zorgen voor een mooie presentatie, maar veel gebruikers melden ernstige technische problemen zoals framerate-dalingen en bugs. Buiten het hoofdverhaal zijn er weinig extra activiteiten, waardoor de open wereld wat leeg aanvoelt. Cubed3 Rating Mafia: Definitive Edition is a memorable and excellent story that does justice to both its original groundbreaking title and the movies it is paying homage to. The character and story of protagonist Tommy Angelo is one that is easy to get invested in and this world of Lost Heaven exudes the charm and atmosphere of 1930s New York. Excellent pacing and plot over the course of 10-12 hours mean it will keep anyone hooked. That said, it feels like a game pushing this hardware to its limit and the limitations do catch up with it in a lot of ways. Anyone who has a PC capable of playing the game would be well advised to maybe opt for that platform. Additionally, some unnecessary bugs and controls that can be difficult on a console controller sour the experience somewhat. However, there are not many alternative titles of this genre and Mafia: Definitive Edition certainly delivers a rip-roaring tale for those who wish to experience it.

Laat je door de laatste punten niet van de wijs brengen als je een aanschaf overweegt. De verschillende grafische punten zijn slordig en bij vlagen kan het wat irritant zijn (screen-tearing), het effect op de gameplay is echter zo goed als nihil en dat is een fijne constatering. De shootouts zijn op zichzelf spectaculair, spannend en erg tof, maar het strafen had iets vlotter gekund. Dat zijn de punten waar we wat op aan te merken hebben, net zoals de lip-sync. Buiten dat kunnen we niets anders zeggen dan dat Mafia: Definitive Edition een remake is die je moet spelen. De sfeer in de stad is fantastisch, het verhaal is boeiend, de voice-acting is sterk en er is genoeg om te doen. Met ruim tien uur gameplay heeft het verhaal genoeg te bieden en na afloop kun je nog op jacht naar tig collectables of gewoon een puinhoop creëren in de Free Ride modus. Liefhebber van de franchise of niet, de remake is ondanks z’n verbeterpunten hier en daar de moeite waard.
