Spend the extra few dollars and buy the Canon brand ES-68 hood for your EF 50mm f1.8 STM lens. Fits very nicely on the lens.

I bought this for m 50/1.8 obviously to control lens flares, but also (mostly) to protect the front element of the lens. The 50/1.8 STM front element extends during focusing, and unless you zero it out before you remove the lens from the body, it stays extended. Pushing on it or leaving it extended in your camera bag could potentially damage the focusing mechanism. I like to always leave the hood in place to prevent that element from coming into contact with anything.
